With integration services, can a virtual machine take direct advantage of a NICs features through Paravirtualization?
Yes it does. In class we talked about enlightened, and non-enlighten guests partitions. When you install the integration services, you allow for Microsoft’s support for paravirtualization. Paravirtualization is called “enlightened” in Microsoft’s documentation. This reduces the emulation of physical components, such as the network interface, and provides a performance improvement and additional system management options.
Integration services are built into Vista SP1 and later operating systems. Below is a list of operating systems that Hyper-V can provide integration services for:
•Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (all versions)
•Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
•Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 6a (SP6a)
•Microsoft Windows XP (all versions)
•Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
•Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
•Microsoft Windows 98
•Microsoft Windows 95
