Is BitLocker available on server 2008 Standard edition?

BitLocker is not only a good idea for safe guarding you data on a laptop, it also has value for securing servers. Since servers are not always put in secured locations in branch offices, having the ability to run BitLocket on them help to protect your data should the server ever grow legs. The thing to remember is that on Server 2008 R1, you can only encrypt the OS drive. On the R2 version, you can encrypt all drives.

The following operating systems support BitLocker:

  • Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition
  • Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit Edition
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit Edition
  • Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-V
  • Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V
